Hayes Theatre Co is named after Australian musical theatre legend, Nancye Hayes OAM. Honouring the vast history of Australian Musical Theatre and its practitioners.

nancyehayes performingHayes Theatre Co is a venue located at 19 Greenknowe Avenue, Potts Point, with a focus on providing a permanent home for small-scale musical theatre and cabaret. By providing venue space to newly mounted productions Hayes Theatre Co is a presenting partner together with independent producers and artists, as well as providing a permanent location in Sydney for New Musicals Australia.

Hayes Theatre Co presents a range of performances, from re-imagined classic musicals, new work from Australia and overseas, cabaret, and children’s productions, and connects with an already established music theatre-loving audience in Sydney. This intimate venue gives audiences the opportunity to enjoy an up-close-and-personal music theatre experience.

Nancye Hayes is one of Australian musical theatre’s true triple threats, being a superb dancer, fine singer, actor, and now also a choreographer, director and teacher. She has performed and starred in numerous musicals in Australia such as Promises, Promises, Cabaret, Pippin, Irene, Nine, Sweeney Todd, Chicago, Annie, 42nd Street, Guys and Dolls, Follies in Concert and Showboat to only name a few.

Ms Hayes has received many accolades for her contribution to the Australian theatre scene which include two Helpmann awards, Lifetime Achievement Awards from the Variety Club, the Green Room Awards Association and the Sydney Theatre Awards. In 2011 Nancye was honoured to be a recipient of the JC Williamson Award that recognises outstanding contribution to the Australian Live Performance Industry and in 1981 her services to the performing arts were recognised with the Medal of the Order of Australia.

A shy young boy who is bullied at school, he spends his waking hours immersed in his video games – the ONLY thing that can draw his attention away is Harumi, the girl of his dreams. One day, his adventure begins, a strange chain of events find Akio and Harumi sucked into his video game world, but Harumi is then kidnapped by a powerful, villainous creature! Akio has to save her… but where will he get his strength? Where will he find his bravery? How will he stand up and face fear head on? in his quest to rescue Harumi, Akio will meet wise friends and terrifying monsters, all the while learning what makes a hero, what defines a villain; and perhaps how the two are not so different after all. Through power of will and strength of heart, Akio learns the most powerful weapon of all…

Akio! is a physical theatre piece, which combines the crafts of acting, dance, choreography, movement, sound and audio-visual design, to tell a universal coming-of-age tale. Inspired by Japanese theatre-maker, Tadashi Suzuki and his philosophies of theatre performance and culture, Akio! is a marriage of cultures into one uplifting story of love, bravery, courage and discipline. Theatrically, it explores the beauty of the human body, as it weaves Japanese mythology and gaming culture into an advetnure to be enjoyed by all ages.

Akio! is a celebration of childhood, of growth, love and learning to understand and accept your enemy in the face of viloence.
